A New York Times article examines the strengths and limitations of BMI calculations. Author Jane Brody quotes cardiologist Dr. Carl Lavie as saying “The B.M.I. tables are excellent for identifying obesity and body fat in large populations, but they are far less reliable for determining fatness in individuals.” Her article also notes that BMI measurements can be unreliable for many de-conditioned older adults as well as for highly fit individuals.
