The Transformer 2 is our preferred automatic folding scooter because its folding mechanism removes almost all of the physical effort normally involved in preparing a scooter for transport. Press the wireless remote or onboard folding button and the scooter folds itself into a package approximately 18 x 22 x 25 inches. There is no need to remove the seat or manually manipulate a series of hinges and catches. That is especially useful for users with reduced hand strength, arthritis, restricted bending ability or limited dexterity.
The Transformer 2 supports riders up to 300 pounds and provides up to approximately 13 miles of range. Its maximum speed of 3.75 mph is relatively modest, but speed is not the main attraction here. This scooter prioritises convenience and straightforward operation. Front and rear suspension also provide a more forgiving ride than some minimalist travel scooters, while electromagnetic brakes bring the scooter to a controlled stop when the throttle is released.
What we liked
The automatic folding mechanism provides a genuine accessibility benefit rather than merely being a gadget. For someone who can drive a scooter comfortably but struggles with the physical process of folding one, the Transformer 2 can make independent transport considerably easier. It’s nice to be able to fold the scooter without having to kneel down.
We also like that it retains a 300-pound capacity, useful 13-mile range and front and rear suspension rather than sacrificing basic scooter performance to accommodate the folding mechanism.
What could be better
Automatic folding does not mean automatic lifting. At roughly 55 pounds without the battery, someone still needs enough strength to get the folded scooter into a vehicle. The 55-inch turning radius is also fairly wide. Reviews of the Transformer frequently identify its maneuverability in very tight areas as one of the compromises of the design.
There is also more mechanical complexity than in a manual folder which usually means more things can break, but this is the trade off for the convenience.
