The Rubicon FX3 is considerably more substantial than the ultra-light scooters in this guide. Its purpose is not simply to get you through an airport terminal or shopping centre, it is designed to provide more capability on grass, gravel, ramps, brick paths and uneven pavement.
Four wheels, four-wheel suspension and large 10-inch front tires provide a more stable platform than lightweight three-wheel scooters. Ground clearance of approximately 3.75 inches is also significantly better than many compact folding designs, which can have less than two inches between the chassis and ground.
The dual 200W motors provide 400W of combined motor power, and Rubicon offers three speed modes of approximately 3.75, 6 and 8 mph. That makes the FX3 one of the faster scooters in our current selection.
Rubicon’s Amazon listing advertises up to 25 miles prominently, but its detailed specification section lists up to approximately 18 miles with the 36V 15.6Ah battery. We therefore use the more conservative 18-mile figure for the configuration described in the technical specifications.
The scooter folds to roughly 16 x 21 x 27 inches, which is surprisingly compact given its larger wheels and outdoor-oriented design. It weighs approximately 65 pounds, so it will require more lifting effort than lightweight products such as the PAISEEC or SuperHandy Passport.
What we liked
The FX3 has a clear reason to exist in this comparison. If you regularly encounter grass, gravel, uneven pavement or sloping ground, its larger tires, four-wheel layout, suspension and extra ground clearance provide capabilities that minimalist travel scooters simply cannot match.
We also like the selectable speed settings. An 8 mph maximum is useful outdoors, while being able to reduce the maximum speed gives the rider more control in shops and crowded spaces. Its 300-pound capacity is also pretty generous without moving into the much heavier specialist-scooter category.
What could be better
At roughly 65 pounds, the FX3 is portable in the sense that it folds, but it is not particularly light. Buyers should consider who will actually lift it into a vehicle. The five-foot turning radius is also substantially larger than the turning circle of many compact scooters, so this would not be our first choice if most use is inside a small home or tight shopping environment. Works as an outside scooter, but unless you are attempting a 27 point turn in your hallway, its no good for indoors.
Finally, current owner-review volume for this exact FX3 listing is still limited. Its impressive outdoor claims are therefore supported more strongly by the hardware and manufacturer specifications than by years of accumulated owner feedback.
