The EV Rider Transport 4AF provides a useful middle ground between lightweight travel scooters and conventional four-wheel mobility scooters. Its main advantage is that it combines four-wheel stability with automatic folding. Press the remote control and the Transport folds down into a package approximately 30 x 18.3 x 17.7 inches.
At roughly 52 pounds including the battery, it is much more manageable than a full-size four-wheel scooter, although it is not as easy to lift as the PAISEEC or SuperHandy Passport. EV Rider’s formal specifications list a maximum speed of approximately 3.8 mph and a range of up to around 8 miles. That makes the Transport 4AF better suited to shorter everyday outings and travel than long-distance use.
The four-wheel design is the main reason we would choose it over the Transformer 2 for buyers who place greater emphasis on a planted, stable platform.
What we liked
We found in our testing that the automatic folding and four wheels make a strong combination. Buyers who do not feel comfortable on minimalist three-wheel scooters can retain a more conventional wheel layout without giving up the ability to fold the scooter for a vehicle.
The 39.4-inch turning radius is also fairly manageable for a four-wheel scooter of this type.
What could be better
The biggest weakness is ground clearance which we found was difficult around our test facility. At only around 1.4 inches, the underside can encounter raised thresholds, uneven transitions and obstacles that other scooters pass over more easily. Range is also modest. EV Rider’s current formal specification is around 8 miles, so this would not be our first choice for long days away from a charger. And while 52 pounds is light for an automatic four-wheel scooter, some users will still need help lifting it into a vehicle without risking an injury.
